Control of scab and alternaria on fruit trees requires numerous fungicidal treatments that contribute to pathogen resistance

Scab and alternaria pose a significant threat to fruit crops, especially under weather conditions favorable for pathogen development. Ukravit specialists recommend not waiting for symptoms to appear, but to carry out preventive treatments in advance and use contact fungicides based on mancozeb.

According to Vyacheslav Polishchuk, head of Ukravit’s horticulture department, the wide range of threats requires constant monitoring and a large number of sprayings, including fungicidal ones.

“Such a number of treatments inevitably creates the risk of pathogens developing resistance, so it is best to give preference to contact products and the alternation of active ingredients to prevent the development of resistance in pathogens. Today, in the last month of summer, hot weather prevails, which is favorable for the spread of alternaria. In addition, manifestations of scab are observed everywhere in gardens. To treat existing symptoms and prevent infection, it is advisable to choose products based on mancozeb: this active ingredient simultaneously deals with scab and alternaria and reliably protects fruit plantations from future damage,” he says.

To control scab and leaf spot diseases of fruit crops, Vyacheslav recommends the fungicide Manvit (mancozeb, 750 g/kg). Mancozeb is a contact active ingredient with protective action. It does not have fungicidal activity in the classic sense, but when dissolved in water, it forms bisisothiocyanate sulfide, which under UV light turns into ethylenebisidithiocyanate. These substances affect fungal enzymes, disrupting important biochemical processes in the cytoplasm and mitochondria of fungal cells. As a result, spore maturation is inhibited and the spread of fungal infection is weakened. In total, mancozeb controls over 400 pathogens of fruit, vegetable crops, and grapes.

The preparation also contains zinc and manganese, which positively affect crop photosynthesis and contribute to its more productive course, which ultimately improves the quality indicators of fruits.

Manvit can be used both for prevention and for therapeutic purposes if the crop is already affected. And since the fungicide is contact, it minimizes the risk of pathogens developing resistance.
