Moniliosis and Coccomyces are spreading in gardens: how to protect plantings without the risk of resistance

Ukravit

The weather conditions of the current season contribute to the active development of diseases in gardens, so producers should strengthen the preventive protection of plantings. Ukravit specialists recommend timely spraying and using contact fungicides to control pathogens.

“On the fruits and foliage of pome crops, we encounter manifestations of scab, powdery mildew, and alternariosis today. On stone fruits, coccomycosis, moniliosis, and clasterosporiosis are spreading. Their timely control and prevention of potential threats are the way to preserve future yields and ensure their high quality indicators,” said Vyacheslav Polishchuk, head of the gardening direction at Ukravit.

At the same time, the large number of treatments required for orchards per season creates a risk of pathogens developing resistance, which can significantly worsen protection and create “weak points” in it.

Therefore, the specialist advises to prefer contact products that prevent the formation of resistance, provide treatment for existing disease symptoms, and prevent further infection.

To control scab, brown spot, and gray mold of pome fruits, and clasterosporiosis and moniliosis of stone fruits, Vyacheslav Polishchuk recommends using Phenomen Prime (captan, 780 g/kg) at a rate of 2.0-2.5 kg/ha. The choice of rate depends on whether the fungicide is used alone or in combination with systemic fungicides. Captan reacts with protein groups, destroying the main enzymes necessary for spore germination.

Among the key advantages of the fungicide Phenomen Prime:

  • preventive and therapeutic action (at a low level of infection);
  • minimal risk of resistance development in pathogens due to a multi-vector mechanism of action, which allows the use of the product in anti-resistance programs;
  • no formation of a “mesh” on fruits and berries even with repeated use;
  • effective control of storage scab, which causes significant losses during fruit storage;
  • safety for pollinating insects.

To combat scab without developing resistance, Vyacheslav also recommends alternating contact products Phenomen Prime, Delavit, and Manvit.
