Green spaces in the capital are increasingly being designed using ornamental grasses. Currently, they can be found not only in parks and squares but also at transport interchanges, boulevards, along highways, and in new landscape compositions. This approach is part of a modern urban greening concept that combines aesthetics, environmental friendliness, and adaptation to climate change. This was reported by the Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Valentin Mondriivskyi.
“Today, greening Kyiv is no longer just about creating beautiful spaces. We are consistently changing our approach to shaping the urban environment, focusing on its resilience to climate change, efficient resource use, and comfort for people. That is why we are increasingly implementing nature-based solutions that have long been standard in European cities. The use of ornamental grasses is one example of such a systematic transformation of urban greening,” noted Valentin Mondriivskyi.
By 2026, ornamental grasses have already been planted in 117 locations across different districts of Kyiv. Landscapers use various types of perennial plants, including Miscanthus, Calamagrostis, Pennisetum, Molinia, and others, which are well-adapted to urban conditions.
“Ornamental grasses are a practical solution for a modern city. They adapt well to urban conditions, require significantly less watering and care, help improve the microclimate, trap dust, and support biodiversity. Furthermore, these plants remain decorative throughout the year, changing their appearance depending on the season. That is why we are consistently increasing the number of such plantings in the capital,” stated Pavlo Ivanov, Director of the Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation of the Kyiv City State Administration.
A key advantage of ornamental grasses is their low maintenance. These are perennial plants that do not require regular replacement and frequent watering, allowing for more efficient use of water, equipment, and human resources.
The use of ornamental grasses aligns with modern European approaches to urban greening. In Kyiv, this approach is gradually becoming an integral part of creating a comfortable, ecological, and climate-resilient urban space.
