Agrarians of the Mykolaiv region have practically completed the harvesting of early cereals, leguminous crops, and rapeseed, achieving one of the best yields in recent years. According to the department of agro-industrial development of the Mykolaiv OVA, the harvest was gathered from 657 thousand hectares, with a gross grain yield exceeding 2.3 million tons at an average yield of 3.55 tons/hectare.
The main part of the harvest is wheat — about 1.6 million tons with an average yield of 3.78 tons/hectare. Almost 600 thousand tons of barley were harvested with a yield of 3.41 tons/hectare, and peas — over 100 thousand tons with 2.17 tons/hectare. In addition, the region’s agrarians received over 300 thousand tons of rapeseed.
Compared to last year, the gross yield of early cereals in the Mykolaiv region increased by almost 400 thousand tons, and rapeseed — by 30 thousand tons. Representatives of the local authorities describe this year’s results as among the best for southern Ukraine in many years.
However, the high yield is accompanied by a sharp drop in purchasing prices. At the beginning of the harvest, wheat and barley were purchased at approximately 9-11 thousand UAH/ton, whereas now prices have fallen to 5-7 thousand UAH/ton. The main problem for agrarians remains limited access to traditional sales channels.
Due to Russian attacks on port infrastructure and damage to terminals, the capabilities for receiving and exporting grain have significantly decreased. As a result, a large supply of the new harvest is putting pressure on domestic prices, while Mykolaiv region agrarians are unable to sell grain at an acceptable price.
